Walk Back to School

When our children go back to school, we want them to succeed in the classroom. Carrying around loads of books, often in heavy backpacks, sitting most of the day and looking at screens are common activities in most learning environments. They also are common activities that can lead to back pain and make it difficult to pay attention and learn. Child chiropractic care is always a good idea to ensure great physical and mental health. Here are some chiropractic health tips for students to help them avoid back and neck pain as they return to school.

Backpacks and back pain

A backpack’s effect on the spine can be painful. A good rule is that it never exceeds 10-20 percent of a student’s body weight. A student who weighs 100 pounds, therefore should never carry more than 20 pounds in a backpack. Backpacks should always be worn with the straps fit snug over both shoulders, and the backpack should never fall below the belt line.

Proper posture for kids

One of the best things you can do to promote a healthy, pain-free spine is to have proper reading posture and proper sitting posture for kids. Many students use tablets in school, which have many advantages, including reducing the weight of backpacks. Staring at screens for extended periods can lead to poor posture and neck or back pain. The proper posture for reading anything – cellphone screens, laptops, tablets, books, etc. – is to look straight ahead, not with your head tilted over your shoulders, looking down. Many students are receiving child chiropractic care to fix issues caused by bad reading posture.

For proper reading posture, both feet should be flat on the floor when students are sitting at their desks. Shoulders should be back with your head over your neck and shoulders. It’s easy for students to develop a habit of slouching when sitting, but kids should keep their back against the back of their chair.

Be sure to stretch

Stretching is especially important for spine health. Be sure your child knows some stretches before heading back to school. Before engaging in any strenuous physical activity, your child should warm up and stretch for 10-15 minutes and cool down afterward. Taking a few minutes to stretch throughout the day will do wonders for your child’s spine health.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care is Beneficial to a Child’s Development

Adults form a significant percentage of the market for chiropractic services, but did you know that chiropractic care can also be beneficial to young children? The fact that chiropractic care offers significant improvements in the health and wellness of adults is already a given, but pediatric chiropractic care also deserves the public’s attention because it can lead to better health and development for youngsters.

A child in his active age is subject to all kinds of physical trauma. Children take their fair share of falls and tumbles while learning to sit, crawl, walk and run. They experience bodily stress as they engage in sports, games and physical activities. Minor falls and tumbles may not seem worrying, but the buildup of these kinds of stressors on a child’s body can cause extensive damage and discomfort to them physically as their musculoskeletal system shifts and causes subluxations and misalignments. This is where pediatric chiropractic care comes into play.

Pediatric chiropractic treatment can be beneficial to the overall health and development of a child. While it is easy to think of children as merely small adults, their bodies are actually a more complex set of parts and components that require specialized treatment. Pediatric chiropractic therapies use different chiropractic techniques in order to help promote better sleep in children, which in turn helps them get enough rest to aid in their development. Discomfort and tension in bed can make it difficult to get a restful night’s sleep, which children need in order to facilitate their growth and development.

Chiropractic care for children can help them improve their behavior and attitude. This is yet another byproduct of improved sleep as a result of therapeutic manipulations through chiropractic care. Treating subluxations in the neurological system also helps improve a child’s behavior and outlook. Chiropractic care is also a great vehicle for improved immune function for a child’s body. This is because spinal misalignments and subluxations are believed to impair neurological functions, hence interfering with the body’s immune system. Correcting these subluxations helps support a child’s immune function by facilitating proper neurological flow.

Children as young as a few weeks old are recommended to have their first chiropractor visit to help them cope with the physical trauma of childbirth. Parents also bring their children for pediatric chiropractic care for conditions like ear infections, colic and general discomfort.

June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

Chiropractic treatment for migraines

June is National Migraine Month, a great time to focus on how chiropractic care can be a great way to treat migraines and headaches.

Anyone who suffers from the intense pain of migraines understands the desire for relief. Unfortunately, there is no cure for migraines. Prescription medications often help, but they can have unwanted side effects such as nausea, stomach pain and more.

Most doctors prescribe muscle relaxers and pain relievers, which address the symptoms but not the underlying cause. Although doctors and scientists do not know the exact cause of migraines, most people who suffer from them report musculoskeletal issues such as muscle tension, stiff necks and pain and tension in the jaw. Chiropractic treatment works to improve musculoskeletal function and relieves pain naturally.

To provide migraine relief for his patients, Dr. Hershberger performs spinal adjustments that reduce stress on the spine and surrounding muscles. Chiropractic adjustments improve the way nerves send signals throughout the brain and have been shown to improve the flow of blood through the central nervous system. Adjustments are an all-natural way to treat and prevent migraines without the risk of complications and side effects.

Like most chiropractors, Dr. Hershberger focuses on overall wellness in addition to spinal adjustments. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic treatment for migraine and headache relief might include lifestyle suggestions, such as:

  • making dietary changes
  • taking B complex vitamins
  • encouraging walking and low-impact aerobics
  • advising on posture (sitting and standing correctly to reduce pain)

When it comes to treating headaches and providing migraine relief, Cimarron Chiropractic aims to reduce pain and maximize neuromusculoskeletal health. If you suffer from migraines, contact us today to see how we can help.

Surprising Facts About Chiropractic Care

Therapeutic manipulation of the spine has existed for thousands of years. Chiropractic care as it is currently known began several hundred years ago. Since then, chiropractic care has gained worldwide recognition as an effective form of supplemental medical care, and patients are reporting positive changes in their health and wellbeing after therapy. Chiropractor practices such as Cimarron Chiropractic Clinic see an increasing number of patients as people recognize the benefits of chiropractic care for their health. Although chiropractic care has been around for hundreds of years, there are still some things that many people don’t know about this therapeutic practice, including but not limited to:

1. The worldwide reach of chiropractic care. Although chiropractic as a profession was officially founded in 1895 in the United States, the art of spinal manipulation as a medical technique has a long and rich history in China. In the mid-1900s, chiropractic had already found its way to a long list of countries across the world, including New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. Practices have also now extended across Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America, making chiropractic a worldwide practice that people subscribe to globally.

2. The benefits of chiropractic care to trauma and torture survivors. Traumatic experiences can leave survivors with chronic pain, PTSD, depression and other long-term problems, which can be difficult to deal with. Chiropractic therapies can help trauma survivors as part of one cohesive and comprehensive approach to treatment.

3. The rigorous training that chiropractors undergo. There is a huge misconception about the way chiropractic doctors are educated. Many people believe they don’t get enough training to merit any form of recognition as medical professionals. Some people also don’t see chiropractic care as a scientific approach to treatment, when chiropractic doctors get thousands of hours of education and training, including clinical and lab internships to secure their qualification as a chiropractor.

4. The importance of professional attention from a certified chiropractic care specialist. Chiropractic care isn’t as simple as popping someone’s back. If an untrained friend claims to know how to do spinal manipulation, allowing him to crack your back might injure you, especially when he doesn’t actually know how to properly manipulate your spine. Chiropractic care requires thousands of hours of education and training to ensure qualification.

How Chiropractors Treat Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common afflictions of modern man. Chronic aches and pains in the back can lead to a great deal of discomfort, preventing sufferers from being able to do even the most simple everyday tasks efficiently. Whether your pain a dull ache when you stand up or constant shooting pains, it pays to visit a back injury doctor who can determine the best course of treatment to alleviate back pain or eliminate the painful condition altogether. When you visit a chiropractor, back pain from repetitive activities, heavy lifting, daily stresses and even pregnancy can be addressed using specialized techniques and a program that is tailored to your unique condition.

Chiropractors can help you with chronic back pain that doesn’t seem to go away, even with the help of medication. Painful conditions like this are typically caused by spinal misalignments that impede the efficient circulation and flow of the nervous system. To a chiropractor, back pain can be very easily addressed by correcting these misalignments and aiding the body’s natural healing process.

Chiropractors use different kinds of spinal manipulations and therapeutic adjustments to treat back pain. Among the most common techniques they use is soft tissue therapy, which works to relax sore and tight muscles. In cases when the muscles are the major source of pain, a chiropractor might use different soft tissue therapies, like manual release therapy and trigger point therapy. Manual release therapy stretches the muscles as pressure is applied, while trigger point therapy applies direct, but controlled, pressure on the area where the muscle experiences the most tension. There are also instrument assisted soft-tissue therapies that are performed with the help of different kinds of massage tools.

Manual therapy, on the other hand, is a technique that chiropractors use to help regain motion within joints. Chiropractic manual therapy can be divided into two major types, namely joint mobilization and joint manipulation. Joint mobilization manual therapy involves slow and gentle stretching of the problematic joint. Joint manipulation uses quick, gentle movements to stretch the joint.

Your back injury doctor may also recommend self-management exercise therapies that you can do at home to maximize the effects of treatments and speed up your healing process.

Do’s and Don’ts After an Auto Accident

A car accident can be an extremely terrifying experience that can lead to a great deal of stress and confusion, especially in the hours immediately after the incident. Add to this all the things that you need to do in order to protect your rights and ensure that your health is ok, and it can be easy to forget important steps that must be done after the crash.
